A Note from Natasha
It is hard to believe within a few weeks, Spring will officially be upon us! Just like all the flowers and buds from trees that we will soon start to see grow, our Pawsperity program has continued to blossom. Over the 9 years we have been in existence, we have streamlined and added to our extensive program—always keeping our students’ success and mission of ending generational poverty in the forefront.
For those who don’t know much about our “all-in” approach, I thought I’d share some program highlights to help you understand why Pawsperity remains the only nonprofit grooming school of its kind in the country—and why your support is so critical.
- Students: Participants, frequently single moms, unfortunately come from traumatic backgrounds including drug addiction, homelessness, incarceration, and domestic violence. They qualify for our program by living at or below 50% of the Area Median Income, as well as receive at least one form of government assistance. Most average making less than $10,000 per year prior to entering our program.
- Key Wraparound Services: Pawsperity has onsite case managers to assist with stabilization for our students, as well as assisting each student with their specific needs and goals. Additionally, thanks to many community partners, Pawsperity has an onsite food pantry, which allows students to have breakfast and lunch during school, plus additional food to take to their families. Housing remains a barrier for most of our participants. Pawsperity has a 6-unit apartment residence two blocks from the school for students and their families. Students can walk to school, which is also very helpful for those with a lack of transportation.
- Curriculum: Pawsperity has designed a seven-month program combining 790 hours of training plus 92 hours of life skills to properly prepare graduates for their new career path.
- Bridge Program: Through an 18-month Bridge Program, Pawsperity ensures long-term employment retention and career growth by offering continued case management, career coaching, and job retention services. Emergency financial assistance is also available to help graduates navigate unexpected financial challenges that could impact job stability.
- Employer Partnerships: We collaborate with dozens of employers, ranging from small salons to national pet care/grooming chains to place students. Our Employment Specialist assists students with interviewing, resume building, and placement.
- Success: In 2024, 100% of our graduates were employed within 60 days of graduation.
- Pawsperity’s Cost: While tuition-free for students, due to the extensive nature of our program, and students typically being supported by Pawsperity over the course of two years, the average cost per student is $50,000.
It is critical for Pawsperity to receive funding from private foundations, companies, individuals, and from earned income from our grooming services to continue supporting all of the imperative parts that make up our program. A big thank you to those who have supported us over the years! Check out all the ways to give here.
